We would love to hear from you!
Easter is a special time for Christians! It’s when we celebrate Jesus rising from the dead—His victory over death that gives us new life. But if Easter is about Jesus, why do we have the Easter Bunny and colorful eggs? Let’s find out!
Where Did the Easter Bunny Come From?
Long ago, people in northern Europe celebrated spring by honoring a goddess named Eostre. She was the goddess of new beginnings, and because rabbits have lots of babies, they became a symbol of new life!
When Christian monks shared the story of Jesus, they mixed some of these traditions with Easter. That’s how the Easter Bunny became part of the holiday!
Why Do We Have Easter Eggs?
Eggs have been a sign of new life for a long time! Just like a chick hatches from an egg, Jesus came out of the tomb, bringing new life to everyone who believes in Him.
Years ago, Christians didn’t eat eggs during the week before Easter, so they saved and decorated them, and gave them as gifts on Easter. Later, people started making chocolate and candy eggs!
How Did the Easter Bunny Start Bringing Candy?
In Germany, kids believed in a bunny called the Osterhase (say: OH-ster-haas) that hid colorful eggs for good children. When German families moved to America, they brought this fun tradition with them. Soon, this tradition was added to Easter. Over time, people added candy, chocolate eggs, and Easter baskets to the items brought by the Easter Bunny.
Get this: In some places in Europe, kids even believed a cuckoo bird or a fox brought Easter eggs—how funny is that?
Easter Is About Jesus!
The Easter Bunny and eggs are fun, but the real reason we celebrate Easter is Jesus! He died and rose again to bring us new life.
So while you enjoy your Easter treats, remember the best gift of all—Jesus’ love!
Happy Easter!
